How important is SEO ? In a nutshell it is everything. Seach Engine Optimization (SEO) as defined by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Some will disagree and suggest content is just as relevant, but without optimizing search engine performance you will never get the desired traffic to your site. Sounds like a mouthful. How is SEO done? SEO is done by several different processes. These processes identified are not all encompasing, but are a basis for starting an increase of your knowledgebase on Search Engine Optimization. 1. The first thing to talk about is Meta tags. A meta tag is a line of HTML coding that contains metadata about a webpage. To view your HTML code. Click on "View" at the top of your browser; scroll down and select "Source". The interesting thing is you can view anyones source code. The below meta tag examples are from blogspot.com, but keep in mind each sites meta tag requirements are a little different. Do some research and find the correct format for your website. This data is used by the search engines and is critical in getting visibility to your website. * A new blogspot site will not have this data (my site did not), so you will have to add it. You need to change the data between the apostrophe signs to fit your needs.* 2. The next piece of SEO you need to know is linking your site. A link building campaign is another very important piece to getting a good SEO ranking. What is a linking building campaign? A link building campaign is a tactic of emailing webmasters to exchange website links in an attempt to increase website traffic for both involved, posting comments using your url, and writing articles like this one. The key to this technique is to find who is linking your competitor's website. This information can be found relatively easy. Once again keep in mind each search engine is a little different. For this example I will use Google. Go to Goolge and type in "link:" (Without Quotations) and add your competitor's http. For example lets say your competitor is http://duanekeiser.blogspot.com/. In the Google search engine type in "link: http://duanekeiser.blogspot.com/". This will bring up every website that has this url linked. Take a look and see how your competitor is linking their website or websites. Use this information to set up your link building campaign. 3. Keywords in your website are essential. Keywords are those words used at the search engines to find things. Using a site like http://tools.seobook.com/ can tell you how many counts on specific keywords and phrases. Tailor your website to include some of these keywords and/or phrases. Also add these keywords to your meta tags like in #1. 4. Writing content is important, but not as important as #1, 2. and 3. Writing well keeps your readers charged, interested, and revisiting. Not all writing has to be long, but make it meaningful. Write with your audience in mind or who you are targeting. Learn from other bloggers, article writers, and experts in your niche are excellent source on improving your writing. 5. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) takes Time. Moving your website up in the search engine ranking does not happen overnight. Tweaking your website content, HTML, keywords , and building a link campaign take time. Be patient. The search engine programs called crawlers, robots, or spiders are designed to search the web for these key elements. The more these programs pick up your url with relevent keywords and content the higher in the rankings you get from search engines. Increasing website traffic to your site is the ultimate goal of SEO. Paying for a SEO service is another option to choose. Chances are they will provide most of these identified tips and more. I recommend learning as much as you can about SEO.
