Building Traffic

Building Traffic

Author: Adel Awwad

Building traffic to a blog or website can be a slow and time-consuming process; unless you're very lucky, success doesn't strike overnight. But with a bit of patience, and by following some straightforward rules, you can see improvement in your traffic statistics over weeks and months, which will see your site grow, expand, and bring the visitors - and the revenue - in.

Here are seven simple ways to boost your website traffic.

1. Content is King

It can't be stressed enough: content is king. Search engine results and links from other sites and blogs are all very well, but if there's nothing on your site worth looking at, those visitors won't be back. The best way - the only way - to guarantee repeat business, whether you're selling widgets or blogging about cats, is to make sure that your site isn't just easy to find, but actually worth reading once they are there.

So, as well as making sure that the content on your website is relevant, interesting, and keyword optimized (see tip 4 below), ensure that it's updated regularly - if you're running a sales website, for example, make sure all your prices are up to date and be sure to update the site regularly with details of new special offers. If you have a blog, you should be putting new posts up every day if you can.

2. Building links

This is a good way of building long-term site traffic, particularly if you have a blog or website that may appeal to a wider community of like-minded people. By putting links to other sites on yours - both down the sidebar and in the body text of your blog or website - you'll encourage other bloggers and webmasters to do the same for you.

Over time, these reciprocal links become very useful - driving traffic to your site and encouraging discussion of your content on other sites and blogs. Search engines like Google tend to rate a site more highly if there are lots of incoming links, so go out and actively encourage other websites and forums to link to your own.

3. Add tags

Make sure you add tags to all your pages and blog posts. Not only do these serve an important purpose in helping search engines to pick up your website, but they also help visitors navigate around your blog or website, which in turn will help you increase your site traffic. If your page title tags are incorrect, on the other hand, that will have a corresponding negative impact on your search engine rankings.

Many blog platforms such as Blogger will automatically attach meta tags to post pages, but even then you should use category tags to improve the visibility and navigability of your site.

4. Keywords

One of the most vital aspects of traffic building is to ensure that you are using keywords properly. It's worth looking around the Internet for specialist articles on this topic, because many millions of words have been written on the subject. With good reason; if you use keywords correctly, it will help build traffic to your website or blog far more effectively than almost any other method.

The basic rules are simple enough. Select the keywords and keyword phrases of most interest to your prospective audience. It may not be enough to use simple keywords, as there are hundreds of thousands of websites selling "insurance" or blogging about "politics." So, instead, try to focus on two or three word keyword phrases that will help guide visitors to your site, like "discount home insurance" - or "keyword phrases."

For the best visibility, put keyword phrases into the titles of pages, near the top of your text, and in the meta description.

5. Be seen by search engines

This is a product of all the factors listed above, but there is one further push that you can give your website to help with building traffic, and that's to make sure that search engines and aggregators know about your blog or site. Target the big search engines, such as Google, but bear in mind that if you're operating in a particular niche market, there may be specific sites and search tools that like-minded people use.

Be sure that you are "pinging" search engines every time you have new content. (There are free services that will do this for you automatically, and many blog platforms will perform the same function.) When it comes to blogs, there are many different directories and search tools people use to find sites of interest. Submit your blog to all of them and watch the inbound links, and your search engine profile, grow.

Finally - and if you think it's worth your while - consider paying search engines for higher placement. Research shows that most people don't look beyond the top two or three search results - so make your site one of those.

6. Analyze your traffic

Traffic building is a whole lot easier, if you know why people are visiting your site in the first place, so get a stat tracking device like SiteMeter or StatCounter - basic site meters are free and help you track visitors by location, duration of visit, pages looked at, and crucially, the URL that referred them to your site. You can also sign up to paid site metering services that give you more advanced coverage - these are more appropriate if your site traffic is already quite high. Once you've established who visits you and from where, you'll be much better placed to work on increasing those visits.

7. Participate in other blogs and forums

This is particularly useful if you run a blog or a website that caters to a particular interest group or niche market. For example, if you run a website that sells tropical fish, aquariums, and accessories, become a member of a forum or newsgroup dedicated to fish. Post on relevant blogs and be sure to comment, so they'll follow your links home, building traffic for your website. You shouldn't overdo this, or "spam" other sites with your own URL, but if you establish yourself as a viable online presence, people will naturally want to visit your site to see what you have to offer them.

Making an RSS Feed

Author: yasir

What Is RSS?

How does RSS syndication work? Say you publish a new web page about a particular topic. You want others interested in that topic to know about it. By listing the page as an "item" in your RSS file, you can have the page appear in front of those who read information using RSS readers or "news aggregators" (explained more in my sidebar article, RSS: Your Gateway To News & Blog Content). RSS also allows people to easily add links to your content within their own web pages. Bloggers are a huge core audience that especially does this.

What does RSS stand for? There's a can of worms. RSS as introduced by Netscape in 1999 then later abandoned in 2001 stood for "Rich Site Summary." Another version of RSS pioneered by UserLand Software stands for "Really Simple Syndication." In yet another version, RSS stands for "RDF Site Summary."

History buffs might be interested that there's been some rivalry over who invented RSS. This is why we have both different names and indeed different "flavors" or versions of RSS. Mark Pilgrim's written an excellent article, What Is RSS, that charts the different versions with recommendations on which to use. I'll also revisit the version choice you'll need to make. But first, let's look more closely at some basics of what goes into any RSS file.

How Easy Is RSS?

I've been exploring RSS because it was time that Search Engine Watch offered its own stories in this manner. I've read several tutorials about making a feed, and they generally suggest that it is easy. They often offer code that you can "cut-and-paste" and link over to specifications that I actually don't find that clear.

For example, the RSS 2.0 specification has an "cloud" element that's optional but which a lay person might still wonder if they should use it. Meanwhile, heaven help the person who stumbles into the RSS 1.0 specification and its complicated RDF syntax.

Sure, making an RSS file IS easy for many. If you understand HTML, you'll probably understand enough to do a cut-and-paste from someone else's RSS file to make your own file. Don't know HTML? Start a blog, because several blogging tools automatically generates RSS files.

As for those non-technical people using WYSIWYG page building tools or personal home page building systems, have faith. Even you can build an RSS file from scratch, as long as you dispense with some of the extra features you probably don't need. We'll go through how to do this below. Later, I'll also mention some tools that will even do some or all of the work for you.

The RSS File

At the heart of an RSS file are "items." No matter what version of RSS you settle on, your file will have to include at least one item. Items are generally web pages that you'd like others to link to. For example, let's say you just created a web page reviewing a new cell phone that's being released. Information about that page would form an item.

To enter your item into the RSS file, you'll need three bits of information:

* Title

* Description

* Link

The title and description of your item need not match exactly the HTML title tag of the web page that the item refers to, nor the meta description tag, assuming you use these (don't know what they are? See my How To Use HTML Tags article). You can write any title and description that you think will describe the page. However, using your page's title and meta description tag certainly makes it easy to copy and paste to build your RSS feed.

In the case of our example page, let's say this is the information we settle on to define it as an item:

Nokia 3650 Combines Phone And Photos

I've been playing with the new Nokia 3650. Finally, someone has got the combination of a cell phone with digital camera capabilities right!

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com/nokia3650.html

Now we have to surround that information with XML tags. These are similar to HTML tags, with the exception that unlike with HTML, there's no set definition of XML tags. Anyone can make up a particular XML tag. Whether it is useful depends on the program that reads the resulting XML file. In the case of RSS feeds, they have their own unique set of XML tags that are defined. Use these correctly, and then anything that reads RSS will understand your information.

Did that make your head spin? If so, don't reread -- just carry on to see how simple it is. First, open a text editor like Notepad. We're going to build our RSS file using it.

For your title, you need to start it with the tag, then follow this with the text of the title, then end with the tag. It looks like this:

Nokia 3650 Combines Phone And Photos

For your description, you do the same, starting out with the opening tag, then following with the actual description, then "closing" with the tag. Now you have this:

Nokia 3650 Combines Phone And Photos

I've been playing with the new Nokia 3650. Finally, someone has got the combination of a cell phone with digital camera capabilities right!

Next, we add the link information, beginning with , following with the actual hyperlink, then closing with . That gives us this:

Nokia 3650 Combines Phone And Photos

I've been playing with the new Nokia 3650. Finally, someone has got the combination of a cell phone with digital camera capabilities right!

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com/nokia3650.html

Now there's one more thing we need to do. We actually have to define all this information as forming a particular "item," which we do using a special item tag.

You place the opening item tag, at the top or start of all the information we've listed. You then place the closing item tag, , at the bottom or "end" of the item information. The finished product looks like this:

Nokia 3650 Combines Phone And Photos

I've been playing with the new Nokia 3650. Finally, someone has got the combination of a cell phone with digital camera capabilities right!

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com/nokia3650.html

Congratulations! You've now made your first item. There's a bit more to do to finish our RSS file. First, what if we have other items we want to syndicate? Then we simply add more item elements, just as we did above. You can have up to 15 items. New items tend to be inserted at the top, with old items removed from the bottom, to make room for new stuff.

With our example, let's see how things look if we add two more items:

Nokia 3650 Combines Phone And Photos

I've been playing with the new Nokia 3650. Finally, someone has got the combination of a cell phone with digital camera capabilities right!

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com/nokia3650.html

Canon MegaTiny Digital Camera Too Small

OK, there is a limit to just how small is too small. Canon's MetaTiny, no larger than a quarter, simply is too little to use properly

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com/metatiny.html

Having defined items we want to distribute, we now have to define our site as a "channel." You'll use the same tags as with the items: title, description and link. However, this time the information will be about your entire site, rather than a particular page. That means our channel information would look like this:

All Gadgets Reviewed

If it's a gadget, we review it. Learn what gadgets are hot and what's not!

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com

Now, how does something reading our RSS file know that the information above is for our "channel" when it looks just like item information? Simple. As long as we don't surround this information with an opening and closing tags, it won't be seen as item information but rather as channel information. That gives us this:

All Gadgets Reviewed

If it's a gadget, we review it. Learn what gadgets are hot and what's not!

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com

Nokia 3650 Combines Phone And Photos

I've been playing with the new Nokia 3650. Finally, someone has got the combination of a cell phone with digital camera capabilities right!

Canon MegaTiny Digital Camera Too Small

OK, there is a limit to just how small is too small. Canon's MetaTiny, no larger than a quarter, simply is too little to use properly

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com/metatiny.html

There are a few last things we need to do. First, we need to add a tag at the very top of the file saying that this is written according to the XML 1.0 specifications. Right under this, we also have to say what RSS version we are using.

So far, everything we've done is compatible with UserLand's popular RSS 0.91 version. However, it also matches UserLand's latest RSS 2.0 version, as well, so we'll define the file as meeting that specification. This will allow us to add other neat features in the future, if we want.

Finally, after the RSS tag, we need to add an opening "channel" tag. That gives us this at the top of the file:

At the bottom of the file, after all the items we want to syndicate, we have to insert a closing channel and RSS tag, in that order. Those look like this:

This means our complete file looks like this:

All Gadgets Reviewed

If it's a gadget, we review it. Learn what gadgets are hot and what's not!

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com

Mind Blowing Options

Everything shown above is the bare basics you need to create a file and start syndicating content from your web site. However, there are additional things you could do.

For example, rather than your entire web site being a "channel," you could actually have different content from within the web site be defined into separate channels. That's something I'm not going to explore in this article, but some of the resources below will guide you through this, when you feel more comfortable.

As hinted at, RSS 2.0 allows you to insert all types of additional information into your feed. It can make your head spin to look at these and decide what to use. The easy answer is, don't bother with anything you don't know. Not every aggregator supports all the options offered. As long as you provide the minimum information suggested above, you should be fine.

Did I Choose The Right RSS Version?

Earlier, I'd mentioned there are different versions of RSS. Even though we entered the bare minimum of information, it turned out that we were able to have a file that was easily considered to be RSS 2.0, the latest version promoted by UserLand and which is widely used.

Indeed, the Syndic8 site reports that the most popular format of RSS by far is RSS 0.91 -- and though we've used RSS 2.0, our file as shown is entirely compatible with RSS 0.91. In short, we're in safe company.

What about that RSS 1.0 version that I said was complicated. Well, it is complicated. However, some people might want to make use of some of the special capabilities that it offers. If you are interested in it, then check out the official specification.

Saving The File

Now that we're done adding to the file, we need to save it. But what name shall we give it? I've looked and not seen any guidance on this. I imagine that's because as long as the file is valid (more below), it probably doesn't matter what it's called.

To make my own decision for Search Engine Watch, I decided to imitate what I saw out at UserLand, which promotes the RSS 2.0 standard that we used. UserLand's example feeds all ended .xml, so let's do the same. As for the first part, that really can be whatever you like. For our example, let's say we just call it feed.xml.

Now that our file is saved, we can place it anywhere we want on our web server. Let's say we put it in the root or home directory. Then the address to our RSS file would be:

http://allgadgetsreviewed.com/feed.xml

Validating The File

Now our RSS file is done, but did we do it right? To find out, we need to validate it. Use the aptly named Feed Validator service. Simply enter the address to your RSS file, and you'll be told if everything is OK -- or if there's something wrong you need to fix.

How about a quick preview of how your new feed actually looks? Then pay a visit to Wytheville Community College News Center. Again, enter your feed URL, and you'll see the clickable headlines and story descriptions nicely assembled inside a box.

The service will also generate a JavaScript code that you can post on your site. Anyone copying the JavaScript can automatically have your feed syndicated into their pages -- pretty neat!

Get Syndicated!

Now that your file is validated, you want the world to know about it! To make this happen, visit the RSS directories and search engines listed in the RSS: Your Gateway To News & Blog Content article. They generally offer submission pages, where you can inform them of your feed.

You also want to make sure people who come to your web site see that you provide a feed. It's very common to post a link to the feed somewhere on the home page of a web site. If you have a dedicated news page, you may want to put it there, as well.

You can link to your feed with an ordinary HTML link. However, many sites use a small orange XML icon to link to the feed. I've also seen some sites use blue RSS icon. I could find no standard about using these. So, to be safe, I did all three with Search Engine Watch. Look on the home page, and you'll see how it's done (and help yourself to the icons, if you need them).

Finally, it's good to "ping" one of the major services that track when web logs and RSS content changes. By doing this, you ensure that other sites that monitor these know to check back at your site for more content.

Weblogs.com is one of these major sites. Enter your site's name and the URL of your feed into the manual Ping-Site Form, and it will know you've updated your feed. The Specs page explains how to set up automatic notification.

blo.gs is another major change monitoring site. It is supposed to receive any changes that come from Weblogs.com, so you shouldn't need to notify it separately. However, if you want to be on the safe side, it's easily done. Use the ping form, which also explains how to set up automatic pinging, as well.

Tutorials & Resources

RSS Headline Creator allows you to skip coding and manually choose the number of headlines you'd like to include in your file, up to the 15 maximum allowed. Then a form with boxes that you fill out will be made. Enter the right information, then push the "Make The Code" button. Your RSS file's code will be generated, for you to copy and paste into a text editor and save.

How To Get Your Web Site Content Syndicated is a Dec. 2002 tutorial by Kalena Jordan and Dan Thies from which I drew inspiration to get my own feed going.

Syndic8's How To Section lists a variety of tutorials that discuss how to build RSS files.

Content Syndication with RSS is a book by Ben Hammersley that was just released in March 2003. I haven't read it, but everything I've heard is that it should be excellent.

RSS Resources Directory from UserLand categorizes helpful information related to RSS, in different categories.

Postscript: Search Types: Blogs & Feeds and SEO: Feeds are sections of the Search Topics area available to Search Engine Watch members with lots of information on the topic of feeds since this article was originally written.

How To Get High Rankings On Google And Yahoo Search Engines

Author: Gareth Owen

Do you ever wander how some sites get top rankings in the main search engines and others do not? Well of course you do. The reason being is that these sites adhere to a system that the search engines love and in return give these websites higher and better rankings in their listings. There are 7 key ingredients that if implemented properly will produce the desired results for you and your website marketing. They are:

Step 1: Advantages of a keyword rich domain name Does your domain name affect your search engine ranking? In my experience, the domain name has an enormous impact. However, this is certainly important if you are creating a new site and attacking a competitive market. However many of you will already have sites up and running that do not contain a keyword rich domain name so do not worry as it is more than possible to rank highly without a keyword rich domain name.

One variable that modern search engines consider when determining which of the thousands - or millions - of results should be presented in the top slots is definitely the domain name of the site. The main advantages of having keywords in your domain name are that you can legitimately include them in contact details and links to other sections of your site and the title of your site. What someone may consider a good domain name and what in reality is in most instances 2 different things. Now I will give you an example of this:

Mr. Smith is creating a site that is going to sell vacuum cleaners. His business name might be Smiths machines and logically he may have that specific domain. However it would be more advantages to have a domain name containing the term vacuum cleaners. For example vacuumcleaners4u or vacuumcleanersstore depending on what is available.

Finally I would like to add please take into consideration where you host your site. If you have a site selling predominantly to the UK or US market you should make sure that the site is hosted in that country. So if a have a site hosted in the US but you are targeting the UK it is not in your interests to have it this way as the search engines will perceive it as a US site.

Step 2: Importance of the Title & Meta Description Tags

Every page title and Meta description on your site is enormously important, from the point of view of both the search engines and your readers. Always use your top keywords in each one of your web pages - it signals to the search engines as well as your readers what that page are about.

Firstly in the title tags of your page you should use your top 2 or 3 keywords or phrases. If you are unsure what a title tag is, it is clearly visible at the top of the browser window. The title tags are incredibly important. As I said before it signals to the search engines what the page is about. In my opinion the title tags should not exceed 75-80 characters.

Secondly the Meta description tag tends to get overlooked far too much. It's one of those SEO things that usually get left to the last minute. Like the title tag a descriptive Meta tag signals to the search engines and your readers what that page is about. When someone does a search on Google they'll scan through the page titles and descriptions. Search engines, especially Google, will display the description you wrote in the Meta description if the search term being used can be found exactly in the Meta description you wrote.

If you do not do this Google will crawl your site and just take the first bit of content it finds and place it there. By thinking out the outlay and terminology you use in the Meta description tag you can boost your rankings. With regards to length I would not exceed 200 characters.

And thirdly the Meta keywords. Personally I do not believe that search engines give this area the credence it once did. In the past people would just cram this area with as many keywords that they could find related to their site but this just does not work anymore. However, this area should still not be avoided. My recommendation would be to place your keywords in this area but do not exceed 250 characters in length.

Step 3: Keyword Density, Content & Blogs

In simple words, keyword density is the ratio of the word that is being searched for against the total number of words appearing on a given web page. If your keyword occurs only 2-3 times in a page of 500 or more words, obviously it has a lower keyword density than a keyword that would occur 8-10 times in a page of similar length.

As far as search engines are concerned, if a particular keyword has a higher density on a particular web page, then the chances of that page obtaining a much better search engine ranking increases almost exponentially. Not all search engines compute or evaluate keyword density in the same way and most have their own proprietary algorithm for calculating the average density of a keyword.

The placement of keywords, in any number of locations on the page, has different results in the various search engines as well. Hence, you should try to write sentences that use your important keywords and key phrases. My recommendation if we are looking at percentages would be no more than 3% of the wording should be the same.

However in our testing this area really is not definitive as we have seen sites rank for a specific key term that only appears once on the page also sites that have a keyword far too many times on the page. What has worked for us is to keep it very much within reason and you will not go far wrong.

Secondly, Content. Content is absolutely crucial to the success of ranking and search on all search engines but especially Google. The higher quality and relevancy of the content not only will increase your rankings but also gives you a far better chance of ranking highly for what we call the "long tail search".

You may have all your main keywords and terms figured out but ultimately we have no idea what phrase someone will actually search under using these keywords. It could be for example if they are searching for "health insurance" they may well just type in "health insurance" or they may type in "health insurance in the uk for a family". If your content contains these words or phrases that are identical or related you have a much better chance of ranking highly and thus getting more qualified traffic to your site. I would say that on a new site that content should start off at no more than 10 - 20 pages and grow slowly. Google will take note of a site that appears with hundreds of pages out of nowhere and initially view at as "unnatural" so grow your content slowly and make it unique and original.

Thirdly we need to look at "blogs". This is a massively overlooked area by most people marketing on the net. The two main places you can go to set up with a blog are either at blogger or Wordpress. Personally I would recommend Wordpress. Here you can create a blog that has so much Flexibility. The choice of alternative plugins that can be placed on a wordpress blog is amazing and all designed to be SEO friendly. Also it can hosted on your own server so it becomes integrated with your own site. Search engines love blogs because of new original content being added on a regular basis. This area really is a whole topic on its own but I highly recommend that you research this and utilize it.

Step 4: Headings

The heading tags will make your headline bolder so it will stand out and will be recognized as important by the search engines. When writing your headings, include your main keywords in the headings. Be as specific as possible to increase your chances of being listed in a reasonable spot in the search engines. For Example. You have a site selling Plasma TV's. You want to explain to your reader about different brands of Plasma TV's so in the heading you could put PLASMAS TV BRANDS. This will be in bold and larger font size this signaling its importance.

Suggestions:Use keywords that relate to the page content in your heading tags Have your keywords occur early in the tags Use multiple H2 and H3 tags where appropriate

Step 5: Filenames

One of the simplest methods to improve your search engine optimization is to look at the way you name your files. Google give lots of importance to file names. You should think what are you going to put in your web page and then give it a relevant file name. How important is your filename? When you do a search in the search engines, most of them will highlight keyword(s) in your filename or your directory path. In other words Google is signaling the importance of filenames by highlighting it. For example if you have a site that sells electrical goods called electricalappliances the page that promotes washing machines should read in the file name electricalappliances/washingmachines.htm This is telling the search engine exactly what that file contains. This area is missed so many times but is a simple thing to do and helps your rankings. So please take this into serious consideration.

Step 6: Anchor text

Very simply Anchor text is the text (title) that appears within your hyperlink. Anchor text tells the search engines about the content of your web pages - what the page is about and how others perceive it. In essence, the anchor text is about the relevancy of your webpage based on a keyword. Therefore your anchor text should always be completely relevant to the landing page (destination page) and should contain your keyword or keyword phrase. For example. On a site electricalappliances the link that takes you to the washing machine page should read "washing machines". Also on the plasma TV site the link that would take you too SONY plasma TV's should have the anchor text SONY PLASMA TV.

Step 7: Quality incoming links

Inbound links are links from other web sites that point to your web site. The number and the quality of inbound links has become one of the most important ranking factors in Google, Yahoo and MSN Search. It's a simple principle: if Site a links to Site B then it is seen by the search engines as a recommendation; that Site A is 'recommending' Site B. The text that is used to link to your website is also very important (especially to Google). Try to include your keywords or phrases into the text that is linking to your site.

Now comes the most important part. Google ranks all pages on the internet by a system of page rank, commonly called PR. This ranges from 0 - 10. An incoming link from a page with higher PR counts several times more than a link from a lesser PR page. So the more links you have from higher PR pages the better is the chance of ranking highly in Google and other search engines. You build links gradually over a period of time.

This is more prevalent with a new site rather than an aged site. This is because Google prefers to see steady natural growth. Of course how quickly you can rank because of this is really down to the market and competition you are up against.

Finally SEO is crucial to the success of any business online. The great thing about the internet is that it really is a level playing field. So there is nothing stopping you from ranking highly for a given keyword or phrase against even the biggest of companies.

SEO TIPS

Author: D. Watts

How important is SEO ? In a nutshell it is everything. Seach Engine Optimization (SEO) as defined by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Some will disagree and suggest content is just as relevant, but without optimizing search engine performance you will never get the desired traffic to your site. Sounds like a mouthful. How is SEO done? SEO is done by several different processes. These processes identified are not all encompasing, but are a basis for starting an increase of your knowledgebase on Search Engine Optimization. 1. The first thing to talk about is Meta tags. A meta tag is a line of HTML coding that contains metadata about a webpage. To view your HTML code. Click on "View" at the top of your browser; scroll down and select "Source". The interesting thing is you can view anyones source code. The below meta tag examples are from blogspot.com, but keep in mind each sites meta tag requirements are a little different. Do some research and find the correct format for your website. This data is used by the search engines and is critical in getting visibility to your website. * A new blogspot site will not have this data (my site did not), so you will have to add it. You need to change the data between the apostrophe signs to fit your needs.* 2. The next piece of SEO you need to know is linking your site. A link building campaign is another very important piece to getting a good SEO ranking. What is a linking building campaign? A link building campaign is a tactic of emailing webmasters to exchange website links in an attempt to increase website traffic for both involved, posting comments using your url, and writing articles like this one. The key to this technique is to find who is linking your competitor's website. This information can be found relatively easy. Once again keep in mind each search engine is a little different. For this example I will use Google. Go to Goolge and type in "link:" (Without Quotations) and add your competitor's http. For example lets say your competitor is http://duanekeiser.blogspot.com/. In the Google search engine type in "link: http://duanekeiser.blogspot.com/". This will bring up every website that has this url linked. Take a look and see how your competitor is linking their website or websites. Use this information to set up your link building campaign. 3. Keywords in your website are essential. Keywords are those words used at the search engines to find things. Using a site like http://tools.seobook.com/ can tell you how many counts on specific keywords and phrases. Tailor your website to include some of these keywords and/or phrases. Also add these keywords to your meta tags like in #1. 4. Writing content is important, but not as important as #1, 2. and 3. Writing well keeps your readers charged, interested, and revisiting. Not all writing has to be long, but make it meaningful. Write with your audience in mind or who you are targeting. Learn from other bloggers, article writers, and experts in your niche are excellent source on improving your writing. 5. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) takes Time. Moving your website up in the search engine ranking does not happen overnight. Tweaking your website content, HTML, keywords , and building a link campaign take time. Be patient. The search engine programs called crawlers, robots, or spiders are designed to search the web for these key elements. The more these programs pick up your url with relevent keywords and content the higher in the rankings you get from search engines. Increasing website traffic to your site is the ultimate goal of SEO. Paying for a SEO service is another option to choose. Chances are they will provide most of these identified tips and more. I recommend learning as much as you can about SEO.

Search Engine Optimization for Blogs

Search Engine Optimization for Blogs

Author: Bill Hartzer

Whether it’s a corporate blog, a news-type blog, or even a personal blog, optimizing your blog for the search engines is a must. There are some simple changes that you can make to WordPress and Moveable Type that will make your blog more search engine friendly and make the search engines beg for more (more post and content, that is!).
Optimizing a blog is just like optimizing any other website. The content and pages (posts) must be unique, they must be search engine friendly, and it needs links from other websites. If it’s a new blog, then you first need to make sure the blog software you’re using is set up so that it takes advantage of all of the possible optimization features. Then, announce it to the world, work on getting some links to it, and start making posts.
WordPress Optimization
If you’re using WordPress for your blog software, it’s important to make sure that your site is search engine friendly, meaning that it can easily be spidered by the search engine spiders. Just like optimizing a website, it’s important to have good title tags and meta tags. Keep in mind that blog software usually uses the title of your post as the title tag, so include keywords in your titles as much as possible. It’s important to set up your blog’s software so that the URLs don’t contain a lot of variables. Instead, use URLs that include the post title or post name in them. For example, if you’re using WordPress you’ll need to set the permalinks so that it uses %postname% in the URL. You can also set up a specific category for the post archives, and you might consider using a keyword that’s related to your blog instead of the default, which is typically the word “archive”. Fintan Darragh of www.dech.co.uk has a great blog post called “Ultimate WordPress SEO Tips” (http://www.dech.co.uk/2005/11/ultimate-WordPress-seo-tips/). Mr. Darragh talks about permalink optimization and says, “The goal: stick more keywords up into the URL and remove the faff which nobody uses, to make the URL search engine and people attractive. Having keywords in your URL is an absolute must, especially when it’s as easy as WordPress makes it.” He also goes on to talk about getting rid of useless tags like the month, day, and year, as well as one important detail: whatever you do stick with the site structure you choose—otherwise you might end up with a lot of useless links to your site. Other tips that Mr. Darragh mentions are optimizing your page titles and your post titles--and installing a few plugins that are useful such as the “Related Posts Plugin” and the “Technorati Tag Generator”.
There are several other places where you can get specific tips about setting up WordPress in a search engine friendly manner, including: * SEO at Aleeya Dot Net - http://www.aleeya.net/category/WordPress/seo/ * The Best WordPress SEO Possible - http://WordPress.org/support/topic/49168 * Search Engine Optimization for WordPress - http://codex.WordPress.org/Search_Engine_Optimization_for_WordPress * Search Engine Optimization for Blogs - http://www.blog-maniac.com/blog-seo.htm * DYI Search Engine Optimization - http://lorelle.WordPress.com/2006/01/15/dyi-search-engine-optimization/ One of the best tutorials out there is one called “DYI Search Engine Optimization” by Lorelle VanFossen. Specifically, Lorelle (lorelle.WordPress.com) has some great tips, including how to optimize your code, develop strong intrasite links, write with strong keyword usage, use categories and tags, and how to use ping services. Lorelle says that “the goal is to help search engine crawlers move through your website collecting information to be stored in the search engine’s database. The key to your blog’s data making it successfully into a search engine’s database is to: 1) Make sure there are no road blocks in the path of a search engine crawler. 2) Make sure the crawler can move through your blog, examining all your web pages. 3) Provide adequate keywords and key phrases which clearly help categorize your content. 4) Provide clearly labeled tags and categories recognized by tagging service crawlers and many search engines today. 5) Take advantage of pinging services.” There are several WordPress Plugins available that will help you take advantage of internal linking (like the Related Posts Plugin) which will link to other posts in your blog that are on the same topic.
Other plugins that might be helpful are plugins that automatically generate a Google Sitemap file as well as plugins that help you categorize the site such as the WordPress Subdomain Plugin (http://www.webguerrilla.com/WordPress-subdomain-plugin/).
Movable Type Optimization If you’re using Movable Type for your blog software, then it’s also important to make sure that your site is search engine friendly and can be spidered by the search engine spiders. Just like optimizing a website, it’s important to have good title tags and meta tags. Keep in mind that blog software usually uses the title of your post as the title tag, so include keywords in your titles as much as possible. Miles Evans (http://www.webpronews.com/expertarticles/expertarticles/wpn-62-20060310Movable TypeSEO.html) says that “Movable Type is optimized quite well out of the box, but there are a few quick tricks to easily providing the spiders with some dynamic content.” He goes on to say that you need to optimize your template. “For my main home page and category index pages I hardcode most of my meta data. Your meta tags will be at the top of the template within the tag. You can get fancy on your index pages but I cannot really see why. Optimize these two templates by hand for whatever keywords you are targeting site wide.” Mr. Evans also has another article titled, “Best Movable Type Plugins” (http://www.webpronews.com/expertarticles/expertarticles/wpn-62-20060310BestMovable TypePlugins.html) that talks about his favorite plugins that help him get great search engine rankings. His favorite Movable Type Plugins for SEO are Dashify, MTPaginate, MT Blogroll, MT InlineEditor, MT-Textile, BigPAPI, as well as Ajaxify (a set of plugins that adds several ajax/javascript widgets into the Movable Type interface), CheckLinks, FormatList v1.0, and Better File Uploader for uploading files. Nicholas Carvan (http://www.nicholascaravan.com) has a great article about Movable Type optimization called “Optimizing your Movable Type blog for Google” (http://www.nicholascarvan.com/blog/optimizing_your_Movable Type_blog_for_google.html). In it he talks about PageRank (and how it relates to your internal linking on your blog), having keywords in your URL (which is important for all blog optimization) and blogrolling. He defines the term blogrolling very well, saying, “Blogrolling: Inbound links are gold, but in Google's eyes, not all links are equal. In particular, Google isn't wild about links contained within JavaScript - apparently they can index them, but that doesn't mean they always want to.”
Once you’ve set up and configured your blog’s software, it’s important to make sure that you leave it alone—if you change your page URLs then any links that you’ve received from other bloggers may not be valid anymore. If you need to change your site’s structure (perhaps you’ve been blogging already and wish to use the tips from this article to optimize your blog), then you might want to take a look at the Objection Redirection WordPress Plugin(http://WordPress-plugins.biggnuts.com/objection-redirection-WordPress-plugin/) if you’re using WordPress. The Objection Redirection Plugin gives you a simple interface to redirect users (and search engine bots) to the proper page, especially if you’ve changed your site’s structure.
Start Blogging The best thing you can do is to start blogging. Go ahead and post to your heart’s content and write, write, write about your topic. The more content you can provide the better—and it seems as if adding content on a regular basis really helps, as well. Feel free to link out to other blog posts that are related to the topic you’re writing about. For example, before you publish a post, go on over to your favorite blog search engine and find another recent post on the same subject—and link to the post. Linking out to other bloggers will get their attention, and hopefully they’ll end up linking to you as well. If other bloggers have trackbacks turned on then their blog will link back to your post. Some trackbacks are moderated, so it might take some time before your link shows up on the other blog. And some bloggers have trackbacks turned off, so a link back to your site might take some manual intervention. Categorize your posts as much as possible, and feel free to add categories as you blog—it will help the internal linking structure of your site, and help the search engines and users find on-topic posts.
Promoting Your Blog Whenever you make a post in your blog, your blog software will attempt to ping certain sites to let them know that you just updated your blog. There are many blog ping services out there, including Ping-O-Matic and Pingoat. Your blog software can be configured to ping sites automatically, and I’ve posted a list for WordPress of ping services on by blog (http://www.corporatewebsitemarketing.info/cwm/WordPress-ping-list). If your blog is new or you would like to get some more links, you can submit your blog to blog directories as well as other sites that will list your blog (don’t forget to submit to DMOZ.org, Yahoo! Directory, and the Best of the Web Blog Directory). About.com has a great article about promoting a blog (http://weblogs.about.com/cs/blogpromotions/a/promoteblog.htm) and even Biz Stone has great tutorial about promoting your blog (http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=1060). Lastly, don’t forget to turn on your blog’s RSS feed. And if you’re looking to promote your RSS feed, try searching your favorite search engine for “promote rss” to find a lot of good tutorials.
Promoting your blog is just like promoting a website—you need good spiderable content, links to your content, and you need to set up your blog software to take advantage of all the great features. There are also plugins that will help make blogging easier for all of us.

Seo For Bloggers

Seo For Bloggers

Author: skipratt

Search engine optimization for a blog is generally different from your normal run of the mill website but it is also very important that bloggers get the fundamentals of SEO right if they want to target free organic traffic from the search engines. Blogs are social in nature which enables them to build links more naturally than a static website. Writing one very popular post can create hundreds or even thousands of links for your site in a very short space of time, getting this kind of popularity is naturally more difficult with a static website. A large portion of people who read blogs also write them as well. If you write quality unique content on your blog and are able to generate fresh ideas related to hot topics of the moment then the links you can obtain can help boost your sites SEO by itself. But like I said it is also important to get the fundamentals right as well. If you’re on a free hosted blog with the likes of Blogger.com or WordPress.com then I highly recommend you make the small investment of establishing you own self hosted blog with its own domain. You can purchase a domain name from GoDaddy.com for less than $10 and you can get shared web hosting for your blog for less than $10 per month from the like of hostgator.com or Dreamhost.com. If you haven’t got the option of hosting your own then stick with Blogger.com, at least then you’ll be able to make some money in the future as they allow Adsense and affiliate links. The most search engine friendly blog platform to use is WordPress which you can download from WordPress.org for free. If you get web hosting through Hostgator or Dreamhost you’ll be able to install WordPress using Fantastico’s one click install meaning you’ll be ready to go in seconds. Assuming you have taken my advice and set-up a WordPress blog on your own domain you’ll also need to install some plugins and change your permalink structure to make your site more search engine friendly. Changing your permalink structure is very simple, just go to options, then permalinks. From there add /%postname%/ into the "custom structure" field and select "Update Permalink Structure". The most important plugins to install to make your WordPress blog search engine friendly are the All In One SEO Pack (Generate search engine friendly page titles, adds keyword and descr i ption meta tags), Google XML Sitemaps (Generates an XML sitemap which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and Yahoo), Dagon Design Sitemap Generator (Generates a fully customizable HTML sitemap) and Similar Posts (Adds similar posts to your posts pages helping spread link popularity). Once your blog and has been set-up to be SEO friendly you’ll now be ready to start writing your posts. It’s important to decide what the main keywords are that you want to focus on targeting. Try not to focus on more than 2-3 general topics (keywords) and develop a list of more focused keywords or keyphrases related to your topics. You can use a keyword research tool such as Wordtracker to help you with this. Once you have developed a nice list of keywords that you want to target you can start writing posts incorporating these keywords, in the titles and within the posts body. Over time with more and more posts you will be building keyword authority for these keywords. It is also a good idea linking all your pages back to your home page using your blogs main keyword as the anchor text. I accomplish this by adding the link to my blogs footer. seo-for-bloggers

BLOGGER MANUAL | SEO TIPS AND TRICKS (GUIDELINE FOR NEW BLOGGER)

SUMMARY: BLOGGER MANUAL | SEO TIPS AND TRICKS (GUIDELINE FOR NEW BLOGGER)

Author: fritz buyung

In this blogger manual I'll show you the basic off all SEO technique. I don't like to chit-chat, so let's straigth to the point. You must know that we have two kinds of optimization that can be done by ourselves. First, is On-page Optimization, and the second is Off-page optimization....
Do you know anything about On-page optimization? It's everyting that you can do to your blog to make it suitable for the search engine. We have several things to do for our on-page optimization:
1. Choose the keywords of your new blog
Use Google External Keywords tool to choose your keywords. How to use this tool? It's quite simple. Consider that you want to use "Blogspot tutorial" as your keyword. All you need to do is to type this keyword in to the keyword box. Fill the Captcha code and click on Keyword Suggestion. You will see a list of keywords that related to your first keyword. You will see that the competition of BLOGSPOT TUTORIAL keywords is to fierce for a new blog. Try to choose other keywords with the lowest competition but still have a good enough search volume. It's better for you to start with the lowest competition level, then slowly but sure you climb up by the number of visitor. If you can take a lot of visitor to your blog, you'll see that you can aim a new keyword with higher competition level. In this tutorial, let's consider that the keyword you choose is "BLOGGER MANUAL"
2.Choose your URL address that suits with your keywords
For example...if it's possible ...why don't you use this URL ... http://blogger-manual.blogspot.com
3. Choose Blog Title that suitable for your blog
For example...use this title..."Blogger Manual for Blogspot"
4. Use title tag in your html
Use title tag that contain the combination of your keywords, if it's posibble...use 7-10 words as your title. For example .... Blogger manual | blogspot tutorial for newbie
a title tag should seen like this
Blogger manual | blogspot tutorial for newbie
you can put this tag right under the tag in your LAYOUT -- EDIT HTML page

5. Use meta tag in your HTML
meta tag is a code that contain the summary of your blog data. There are meta description, meta keywords, & meta author that you should optimize....

6. Use your keyword in your posting title
7. Use your keywords in your articles and spread those keywords at the first sentences, and the last sentences. Don't forget to add your keywords each 2-3 paragraphs.
8. It's better for you, if your main column (the place where your article displayed) float at the left side. It's because the spider will crawl your page from the top left to the botom right. If you put your main column at the right, then the spider will crawl your sidebar and each navigation links inside your sidebar, before it arrives to your article. Your competitor will left you behind. You may say like this "O yeah, than why there is a left float main column website defeated by the center or right float main column websites?" Simple,....It's because the off-page factor that we should talk later.
If it's possible...it will be better if you put your keywords at the end of your page or right in the footer of your webpage.

If you do this, then you can boost your position up to 400 positions. If you were in the 1200 , now you may hit to the 800th position..... Now, you may already bend your face and say "Yeah, and what does it use for?" I'll say "Nothing,...it still can't help you" you have to complete the OFF-PAGE optimization to be the king of the Search Engine Result Page....

Oh, and what is off-page optimization? Simple, it's all about everything that you can do to promote your blog.
1. Increase the number of your visitors. You can do blogwalking to invite people. Or do some promotion in facebook, to invite people visit your blog
2. Build links to your blog. But before you do a link building process, you should know the type of links:
a. Link from shoutbox....it has no credit for you
b. Link from Comment box... it has credit if the blog has relevant content to your blog
c. Trackback link....It's a link that appear if you review any webpage in your blog and leave your link at the comment column of the webpage. It has more credit than a common link from the comment box
d. Reciprocal link is a kind of links that appear if you do some link exchange. It has a very good credit if both of the oage has relevant content. But, has no credit at all if they don't have any relevant content
e. One way link.... If you have one way link that is directed to your blog, then it will be the most perfect link you can have

So what is the criteria of a good link?
1. It connects the relevant pages
2. It comes from a higher Pagerank page
3. It's a one way link

At this poin, is there any conclusion you get? Well, my blogger manual will continue with the biggest question mark...."HOW CAN I GET THOSE BACKLINKS?"
It's quite simple, but I tell you that it won't be easy at all. Your solution is to send a request message to every webmasters that you want to ask for a backlinks. The badnews is A high pagerank Webmaster will be very selective to accept any link exchange offer. It's because...if they make a bad decision of which page should be connected to their website. It can kill their pagerank instantly. Let's consider like this if you accept to link your blog to other website ... and you don't know that the website has been banned by google....than you will take a risk to be banned also by Google. Or at least Google will penalize your blog by reducing your pagerank 1 or 2 points.

Well, It's still the basic knowledge, but I thinks it's enough for you to develop your SEO skill by following this short blogger manual. If you have any question....feel free to visit blogger manual. And you can contact me at contact form that I have provide for you. ----THE END OF BLOGGER MANUAL - SEO SUMMARY ---

How to submite blogger site map to google

Google Mobile Sitemap FlowchartImage by bragadocchio via Flickr

Before doing this, let me say what are sitemaps and how they will help us.The reason we use them is,they will help google bot to crawl, index pages of your site and tell you if there are any problems when they try to index it.It also helps you to know, how many pages exactly are indexed, and what people searched in the search engine
Let me explain the detailed procedure on how to submit your blogger sitemap to google.
1.First,go to google webmaster tools and sign in with your gmail account.
2.After you logged in, you will see this asking you to add a site.
google webmaster tools
to visit your site.
Add your blog url(ex:bloggernewtips.blogspot.com).Don't add with http or www.

3.Next,it asks you to verify your site.It is just to confirm whether you are the owner or not.

CLICK on the 'verify your site' link.

Next,

choose verification method

4.There are two ways to verify your ownership but, there is only one way for the blogger users to add a metatag.

copy the metatag

5.Copy the metatag.

Now,sign into your blogger account>click the layout button>Edit html and paste the metatag just after the head tag and save the changes.

paste the metatag like this
and click the verify button in the google webmaster tools and there will be a confirmation message saying that you have sucessfully verified.

Now,you have to submit a sitemap for google to crawl your site.Go back to the google webmaster dashboard or (home) and click the 'Add' link which is next to your blog name and in the Sitemaps column. Then, you see this,

Choose 'Add general web sitemap' from the dropdown menu and type rss.xml or atom.xml next to your blog address as shown below

and click the 'Add General Web Sitemap' button.

6.That's it.Now your sitemap is successfully submitted to google.Check 2 or 3 days after and you will see the detailed statistics of your blog(indexed pages, any errors, etc.)

If you have any questions regarding this, you can ask here via your comments

Set Up Your Blog For Fast Profit - The Little Secret to Ranking Well

Set Up Your Blog For Fast Profit - The Little Secret to Ranking Well

Author: Ian Hollander

Who else wants to know how the right way to set up their blog for maximum profit? If you are anything like the vast majority of people who are reading this right now, the simple truth is that you probably have your hand up high, right? It's true....there are certain "rules" or best practices when it comes to structuring your blog the proper way, and it's RARELY the sort of stuff that "gurus" and other self appointed experts will tell you is important. (often, because they simply don't know any better themselves) Now, listen up: I'm going to tell you how to set up your blog properly straight out of the gate, but rather than "trust" that I'm right, simply try this set up the next time you start a blog and watch how much better it performs for you, ESPECIALLY if you are doing a lot of off site marketing and promotion. Step 1 - ALWAYS set your blog up on sub domain. (like blog.yoursite.com) or (news.yousite.com) Step 2 - Protect the root level of your domain. Why? Because it gives you an amazing amount of flexibility. You can use the root for a veritable cacophony of different purposes, and you can always change it to "do" whatever you want, whenever you want. I like to create a navigational site map, AND put a big fat opt in box on the root. The site map should point to your blog category pages if at all possible, with keyword rich links. Why does this work well? Well, if you put your blog on the root, you are sort of "stuck" like chuck. If the blog becomes LESS important to your overall marketing strategy, for example, your URL will always be associated with a "stale" sort of feel. Remember, most people will remember your URL, or will visit on the root level, just because that's human nature. And if you've got no activity on your blog for a week or two (or more) people will assume your information is antiquated and getting old. Alternatively, a squeeze page on the root is static. Or.....if you ABANDON the project altogether for a month or two due to time constraints, you can always use the root to redirect to an affiliate program of your choice, ESPECIALLY if you are doing, or have done a lot of article marketing. (as article directories typically WON'T let you re-direct from your resource box links, if they are NOT on the root level) But....I'm going to give you one more good reason: Often, the search engines will "rank" your blog and root level differently. So it's not uncommon to have the blog show up really highly for a given keyword phrase...and then the OTHER pages get a second helping of "search engine love" completely separately, giving you the potential to have up to 4 separate domain results on the first page if you're smart, savvy and paying attention! (because trust me - most of your competition WON'T be!)
